Smart Air Travel Tips for Heightened Security
Just when things seemed to be looking up for airline companies and passengers the latest threat has sent massive changes through airports and airlines around the globe. You don’t have to let the latest changes affect the way you travel or ruin your long-awaited vacation.
Here are some tips for dealing with the heightened security and air travel restrictions to help you get to your destination safely and let you enjoy your trip.
Arrive early. You already knew to arrive at least 2 hours ahead of time. You should now plan on arriving at the airport at least 4 hours ahead of time, even for domestic flights. Due to the sweeping changes that are being implemented there will be a period of transition that can and will result in extraordinarily long lines at both ticket counters and security. Get there ahead of time and plan to enjoy your lunch on the other side of security if you find you have plenty of time to spare once you clear the checkpoints. Remember, it’s better to be 2 hours early for a flight than getting there 2 minutes late and finding your flight has left without you!
Re-evaluate what you are packing. Now is the perfect time to look at what you are taking with you and re-pack before you get to the checkpoints. Many airlines (American, United, etc.) are relaxing their excess baggage restrictions for the time being so that you can take up to 4 bags per person in many cases (be sure to check with your specific airline for exact details). Use this opportunity to pack smart. Remember, no matter where your destination there will always be stores to purchase toiletries and other items. So don’t take this opportunity to bring along the whole house, but rather use it to pack smarter and think about what you need to take versus what you can leave at home.
Need to reschedule? Now is the time! Most airlines in the US are allowing passengers (Even those with restricted tickets) to reschedule or cancel trips without penalty for tickets purchased up to August 10, 2006. Take advantage of this opportunity to change your flight if you need to without worrying about penalties.
Ship it! A lot of airline travelers know the secret to a relaxing vacation – shipping their luggage! FedEx and UPS can get your luggage to your destination usually ahead of your arrival for a nominal cost. Many travelers find this convenient as they only have to take a small carry-on bag with the basics with them. It saves on time in the airport and eliminates the hassle of having to drag luggage around with you throughout the airport.
Be patient. It cannot be stressed enough how much patience will pay off. There is no need to get angry with the ticket agent, flight attendant or security officer. In fact, getting angry may land you in far more trouble than you want. Realize that they are not singling you out – the rules apply to everyone. Take a second to thank them for their work. You might be surprised what a kind word can do for you!

I believe the time has arrived for ALL the airlines to partner with UPS/FED-EX/DHL and such to provide FREE home baggage pick and delivery to your destination. It is simply too inconvenient and too costly to dispose of all your personal products because there might be explosives in them.
I envison the new “FREE HOME BAGGAGE PICKUP PROGRAM” to work something like this:
1. You book your vacation from home (Dallas) to Las Vegas online.
2. Upon booking, you schedule the pickup of your luggage the day before your depature.
3. UPS/Fed-EX/DHL/whoever picks up your luggage and drops it off at your destination (Las Vegas) hotel the same day your flight arrives.
4. The Hotel “holds” your bags until you arrive. For those needing to travel by car then the car rental place “holds” your luggage.
5. Done! and everyone’s happy - no long waiting lines (at checkin or baggage), no disposing of products, no overfilled overhead bins, no hassle.
