Bookstore Rewards Can Pay!

It seems you can’t pay for a coffee or a magazine at either Barnes & Noble or Borders without getting an offer to join their member programs. But do they actually save you money?

If you shop at Borders, do sign up for its rewards program, if only because it’s free. However, you must pay attention if you want to actually use your rewards. For example, You can’t use your Borders Rewards on gift cards, magazines, comic books, newspapers or on its Website. You may also need to keep track of dates in order to use your “personal shopping day” which is rewarded after spending $50 in one month. You’ll get 10% off on all purchases but you have to use your shopping “day” before the end of the next calendar month.

Barnes & Noble’s bookstore rewards program is a little simpler, though it requires an $25 investment up front:

Membership gets you 10% off most items in the store or online at bn.com. But you will have to spend more than $250 at Barnes & Noble each year to earn your initial investment.

Unfortunately for College students, the rewards program doesn’t apply at Barnes & Noble’s numerous college bookstores around the country.

Books-a-Million has a discount card, too. It costs $10 per year and gets you a 10% discount. You don’t get the discount on magazine subscriptions or gift cards, but you do get it at their Joe Muggs coffee shop and for online purchases.

I used to have the BaM card, but I think the best deals are either the local library or amazon.
