How Much Auto Insurance is Enough?

Most people want to have full coverage on their vehicle; however, many people carry basic auto insurance on their vehicles. Liability coverage is the base level of many auto insurance companies. However, should a person get in an accident with an uninsured motorist, they will be out of luck when it comes time to file a claim. The other person will not be able to pay for the cost of the repairs on their vehicle right away, if at all. Uninsured motorist insurance will only raise the cost of their monthly or annual payments by a small amount, depending upon what make of vehicle they are driving at the time an accident occurs.

Many auto insurance companies offer substantial discounts on auto insurance based on driving and accident records and offers more discounts if the person has a child who is driving while in school with good grades. However, their best bet would be to shop around. If a person wants to have full coverage on their vehicle, they should be prepared to pay a good amount of money towards that payment. Full coverage insurance is expensive and not always necessary. However, having liability and uninsured motorist coverage will not make their payments increase significantly.

Year, make and model of a vehicle are also included into the factoring of the expense of auto insurance. Newer vehicles are more expensive to insure. Older vehicles, if they have not been in an accident, have proven themselves road worthy, thus the premium is lower.

Many auto insurance companies will also take a person’s gender into consideration. They consider a woman to be a safer driver than a man. Having a clean driving record will also lower the payments by a considerable amount. Older drivers also have a better chance of having lower payments due to their experience levels in driving. So, having full coverage will be more cost effective for those who have been driving for fifteen years or more, than those who have been driving for five to fifteen years.

All in all, having liability and uninsured motorist coverage should be enough auto insurance for most people. Others, if they have an older car, should also have roadside coverage in case of an emergency or a break down. Older drivers should also carry roadside coverage. People with newer vehicles should typically carry liability and uninsured motorist coverage. A person needs to shop around and compare the prices. Also, they should ask about roadside coverage, and how much it would add to payments to add rental coverage should they be involved in an accident and need a rental car to get to work, school or run errands. Depending upon the company that a person buys auto insurance from, rental coverage could cover the cost of a rental car up to 80% when it is needed. Roadside assistance will save a person from having to make roadside repairs on their own and keep them safe should accidents occur.

The amount of auto insurance that is taken out on one vehicle is up to the owner. If a person is worried about their vehicle and their financial safety, they should shop around and compare the prices that are out there. Call each auto insurance company and tell them the quotes that they have received from competitors and see if that company can offer them the same amount of coverage that the competitors can at a more reasonable price. Once again, the amount of auto insurance that is taken out on any one vehicle is up to the owner. However, having at least liability and uninsured motorist coverage is advisable and is also not going send a person into debt.
