How to Repair Bad Credit
Credit is a very important aspect of your finances. If you have late payments, high debt or charge offs, this will make your credit score decrease. Bad credit will ruin the chances you have for getting a home, auto or other kind of loan when you could need it the most. If you have bad credit it is important to start repairing it as soon as possible to be able to rebuild your ability to purchase on credit.
There are numerous companies out there that promise quick, effective ways to erase bad credit history. These companies charge a high fee and make some outrageous claims. There is, however, no quick way to erase bad credit. Some companies promise to completely erase bad credit and start a person over with a new identity. This is a scam that can send a person deeper in debt and can cause them serious problems with identity theft and other such risks.
Instead of asking a company to completely erase the problem, a person should begin taking steps to rebuild their credit on their own. Steps to repair bad credit are easy enough to follow but the person who does it needs to make a solid commitment to doing it and make a conscientious effort to help themselves and their credit problem. It will take some time, organization and effort but it is well worth it.
The first thing a person with bad credit needs to do is ask for a free credit report. This is so they know exactly how far in debt they are and their current credit rating. This will help the person organize a debt repayment plan that they will be able to follow and will be able to afford. It is important to have a list of exactly everything that is showing up as a negative on your credit so that you can begin to pay it off. You should also periodically recheck your credit report to ensure the paid off items are showed as such.
Finding a low line credit card, perhaps a card with a line of no more than three hundred dollars will help build your credit back up. Use the credit card to make small purchases that can be paid in full. This will build credit back up. This process will be slow but worth it. You can also obtain a secured credit card. The amount of credit will be equal to the amount of the deposit you make. Once you have a history of timely payments the secure card will generally offer you an unsecured card so that you can build your credit.
You can also use a credit counseling service. These can help a person get their life back on track and help to begin to erase bad credit in a person’s credit history. There are a few things that a person needs to know before they sign any sort of agreement for their services. When someone joins a company to help repair their credit, they need to make sure that they receive a copy of the “Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law” before they sign the contract. If the company says that they do not carry this or say that they have run out of copies, call law enforcement officials and report the scam. This document should be read in its entirety so you understand exactly what you are getting into.
Before signing a contract with a credit repair company, the consumer needs to make sure that it specifies a few things. The first thing is terms of payment and total cost of the services that are to be rendered. If the cost is more than a consumer can afford and there is no payment plan, the consumer needs to compare the cost with other credit repair companies. Next, there needs to be a detailed description of the services to be rendered.
A consumer needs to be fully aware of the actions that the company will be taking in order to help the consumer repair bad credit. They can provide a valuable service to help rebuild your credit and get you back on your feet. Whether or not you use a credit counseling service is entirely your decision. You can also rebuild your credit on your own but you need to be committed to doing so. It can be a slow process but it will be well worth the effort.
