The Freezer Challenge

When you open your freezer door do you groan at the sight of unmarked bags of frozen leftovers or scream because a pot roast you bought on its last day at the grocer’s lands on your foot? If feeling you just can not throw something edible away do you stuff it in your freezer planning to eat it another day? Or are you the warehouse shopper who buys in bulk but unfortunately throws a great deal of it away without using it? For many people the freezer becomes a storage space or just a stop for a meal before the trashcan.

A nice little tip for frugal living and a challenge for you and your family to undertake once a year or every few months is to see how many days your family can eat out of your freezer without having to make a trip to the grocery store. Although many will opt to supplement with some fresh vegetables and beverages may need to be purchased either ahead of time or during the challenge, true Freezer Challenge die-hards will very likely be able to find some frozen orange juice concentrate hidden way in the back behind the leftover lasagna.

Certainly eating out of your freezer can become frustrating and a bit challenging at times. Many cooks rise to the challenge and enjoy concocting new dishes. Others buckle under the pressure and call for delivery by the third day. When feeling especially challenged, turning to the pantry for a night or too can motivate a return to the Freezer Challenge. Eating out of your freezer without grocery shopping will save you both money and time.

Undertaking a Freezer Challenge prior to a vacation is a great way to accumulate some extra spending money. Families with teens can involve them by assigning them a night or two to prepare meals. There may be some complaining but an appreciation for meals after the challenge will be sweet.

Undertaking regular Freezer Challenges is sure to decrease your overall spending on food and increase awareness of the frozen items you do purchase.
